Rose M.'s Story

Life Hello from Rancho Cordova Ca. For most people, even from Ca., that means absolutely nothing! Small town amoung many small towns in the high desert of Northern Ca. It has it's perks situated as it is just about 2 hours from Lake Tahoe, and Yosemite, and about 3 to Reno and the Red Woods and of couse the commute to the Bay Area. Not LA, but it has it's share of VIP's in the area. We have two seasons, hot and dry and rain and cool. Blossoms are out by March and leaves are gone by Nov. No snow, but it is beautiful to watch on the evening news every night giving the road reports for the ski crowd heading up the hill. And the "snow fix" for the year can be made driving up to the snow line to enjoy without having to deal with it on a daily basis. The American and Sacrament meet in Sacramento...hmmm remember our history lessons. Old Sac, Gold Country, Sutters Fort, Folsom, Stockton, San Francisco etc. They're all here. OK, so any questions as to why I am not back in Beloit? Most of us are going to be pushing 60 and for me the midwestern weather would be very hard to cope with. Physically as well as not being able to be out and active most of the year. This is one of the major areas for the handicapped of all types. Not only because of the Medical Facilities available, but they can be sure of being able to get out every day of the year. No snow banks, etc. to challenge wheelchairs etc. Which having Skyler in both his power as well as manual chair makes our lives so much easier. Along with a good Regional Transit transportation system as well as Amtrac to the Bay we can go and do whenever. Have lived at the same address for 17 years now. Skyler is going to be 17 in Dec. He is very advanced and is homeschooling. My other son works at the Ca. State Archives and is in the last year of his Masters. So my life revolves around them and their friends. s well. Like to think it keeps me feeling younger....maybe??!! Otherwise it is a quiet life, two cats fill out the household. Still keep busy with sewing, work on a few dolls here and there, but mostly it has been working on Ancestry and putting together albums that have long been ignored. Carry at least one camera with me at all times, so the photographs add up fast. And soon the stacks are overwhelming! Speaking of photos and history, am a charter member of WIMSA, Women in Military Service in Washington, D.C. Having been stationed at Andrews AFB and living in the Distric it seemed appropriate that all my uniforms etc. be sent back to the museum for incorporation in their displays. It takes some people aback when I say that enlisting was my way of demonstrating against the war in Viet Nam. Went in as a Medic, and stationed to receive the field litters off the Air Evac planes....worked Orthopedics so had those who had stepped on land mines etc. Guys our age, who were drafted and had no choice...mine was to be there. So now it came full circle...Travis USAF Hosp. was our "Sister Ship" so to speak at Andrews. Never thought would find myself out here and using it all these years later. Life has it's surprises!! Hope all of you are still open to life and the surprises that it still holds for us. Looking back sure isn't the script that had planned back in High School, or even could have dreamed of with all the zigs and zags along the way. Each day is another day we are given to do with what we choose, making them count is the important thing. Enjoy each day, find something positive to focus on and don't be afraid to reach out to others. As we enter the next decade of our lives it is important to feel connected to our world, and still active in what we believe in. So for those of you Graduates of BMHS 1966 would like to wish each and every one of you the best in the years to come. Rose Marie Winek Hoffman.
